That one snow-day mentioned in the last blog was extended to a whole week of snow-days. Last week the roads were not safe and this past weekend our culdesac was hit with over a foot of snow. So with everyone home and our cars being stuck in the garage, our house has turned into "Mika's B&B". Roger handles the cereal in the morning, but after that Mika serves up lunch, dinner & snacks while handling laundry and dishes in between. It was all "yummy-good" food, as Maile would say, but a bit exhausting for Mika who now has a serious case of cabin fever. :-)
We did manage to escape from the house one day last week to get a Christmas Tree. When we brought it home Ellie was concerned about us leaving the tree in the garage for the first night. The next morning Ellie told us about her dream that Santa couldn't find our Christmas Tree because we never got around to bringing it in from the garage. Since Santa could only fit small presents under the kids' small fake tree, Santa had left her a miniature American Girl doll instead of the full-sized American Girl doll. To Ellie's relief, we brought the tree in the next day.
Most of the snow days had nice weather, but with Roger working and Mika running the B&B there wasn't time to go outside until the weekend. Saturday was the huge storm that officially snowed us in, but Sunday was another great day. After breakfast Roger and Ellie went sledding on our culdesac. There was a half-inch of ice on top of the snow, which made for excellent sledding conditions. After about an hour outside we came back to the B&B for some hot chocolate. After lunch we went out for another sledding session with both Ellie and Nisa. Mika gave it a try as well, but Maile preferred to watch from the garage. The girls also had fun just playing in the snow and decorating the house with broken-off ice sheets.
After the second sledding session we headed back to the B&B for some more hot chocolate and then hung out in the jacuzzi tub and watched Elf before having a nice dinner & dessert. Later Roger asked the girls what was more fun, playing in the snow or the jacuzzi tub, to which Ellie & Annisa both yelled "JACUZZI TUB!" It is hard to compete with jet bubbles.
One parting Christmas story for now... Roger was trying to explain the importance of Christmas to Ellie and that it is more about giving and showing generosity than just receiving a bunch of stuff. To which Nisa responded in a very sincere voice, "And Daddy, it is also about parents giving gifts to their kids, right?"
Finally, a special thanks to Mike, Amy and Lucas who periled the roads of Forrest Heights to bring us some Christmas packages from the post office along with some much needed supplies from the grocery store.
Aloha, Alaska!
